Inaugural Fighting ALS Charity Race October 20th, 2007
With 63 cars it was a busy day for us, but before I get into the details I wanted to thank everyone on the team who pitched in to make this an absolute success.

Gary Stephenson, Lara Paolini, Al Romack, Reggie Barnes, Chris Dimeler, Bryan Fung and Frank Adams all played major roles in making sure things ran smoothly on race day.  Thank you guys (and girls), you all did a fantastic job.  A special thanks to Ron Brown and Mike Lombardo for helping with setup and clean up, and Tyrice for arranging the free food for the drivers!!

So, 63 cars.  A major event as these things go, and no doubt one of the bigger events I have seen for this scale on the East Coast.  We had local guys and people coming from NY, NJ, DE, VA, and PA, so the level of competition was taken up a notch to what we were used to.  It was nice to see the 1/18th scale guys come out and play and I think the RCP track challenged them like no other race.

Rich Hull (the event's inspiration) was also in attendance, but we could not allow him to race as his batteries and motor (on his wheelchair) were not to spec.  Sorry Rich, maybe next year.

After all this work and fun we pulled in an amazing $2392 for ALS (our goal was $2000).  100% of those proceeds go to ALSA to fund research, awareness and family support programs for people diagnosed with ALS.

The response from the outside participants was tremendous.  The blogs exploded and the drivers want to see this again next year, and based on the feedback there is no reason not to.  We just need to prepare some more room for increased participation!

Below is a break down of what happened on the track, but the pressure was one as we ran out of time and could only run two qualifying heats.  If more drivers come next year  I think we will have to run another heat the Friday night before.

The qualifying rounds were a little hit and miss with only the leaders having repeatable heat results.  In the Main things stayed the same.  Larry Frey had a little hiccup towards the end and Ken Butler capitalized but wasn't able to hold Frey off in this epic battle.  A well deserved win by Frey whose qualifying runs were a fair warning to everyone else in the pack.  The two leaders exchanged the lead a few times during the main as everyone had a clean race, with Larry's son (Adam) taking 3rd.  And clearly Hester forgot to replace the batteries.

Again Larry Frey exacts his dominance by nosing Ken Butler for the TQ, but Butler would have his revenge in the Main.  Frey really had some bad luck in the Main, he couldn't find his way around those in front of him and any time he made headway he got tied up with another car only to place him at the back of the pack again.  The battle for 2nd, 3rd and 4th was tight.  Its worth looking at the race data to see that 2nd and 4th were separated only by 1.4 seconds.  David Brown, Tyler Quinn, and Saint Arpus really put on a good show.

MiniZ F1
A first at NCRC!  No one in our club has had the chance to see a F1 race in person and seeing these cars rip around the track certainly filled some wish lists.  With any open wheel driving clean lines are a must and credit must go to everyone in this category as they all were text book lines, just sometimes others were in them!!!

Matt Ward made a minor mistake and let Hillmann by with only 6 laps to go but Matt Ward would not have any of that and kept his cool, didn't let Hillmann out of his sight and took back the lead just laps from the finish.

Ed Check remained consistent over the entire day and put in a strong Main to finish 3rd.  Bojarski was missing from the hunt as he was back and forth with Anastasio and just couldn't shake him from his mirrors.

1/18th
It took some getting used to for the larger cars to make it through the tight sections but it was certainly a driver's course and the foam barriers played no favorites in grabbing the wheels on tight lines.  In the end Ed Check gave Mike Gee a run for his money but because Gee couldn't stick around for the Mains (due to other commitments), Check ran away with the race.  He made it look easy but Ryan DalNagore kept him honest on this large track.  Local favorite, and an all around nice Canadian, Rob McRae pulled out a fast final qualifier to start 4th and stayed strong to take the last podium spot while David Sustello struggled during qualifying with electrical issues and placed a respectable 4th.

 Heat 1, Heat 2, Heat 3, Heat 4, Heat 5, Heat 6, Grid, B Main, A Main

MiniZ Stock
Not wanting a repeat from his F1 performance Jeremy Hillmann took the lead from line to line in the Stock category.  It wasn't easy because Sustello, Ed Check and Ken Butler kept him honest.  With those guys breathing down your neck you have to run a perfect race and Hillmann was in the groove.

Pretty much every Main was a battle, everyone were so closely matched that every race was nail biting.  I am sorry but you can't put in to words the racing that took place in this large category.  Come next year and see for yourself!!
