![]() 12/7/2006 Pole Position ≠ Win Rookies
As the cars lined up there was tension in the air. Arndt knew he had his work cut out for him and Dresser was chomping at the bit to get his second win this season. Right from the start Dresser and Arndt were neck in neck with the Fords of Dimeler and Grenier close behind. Half way through the race Dresser had a strong lead over the Firebird but a burst in the fuel line dashed his hopes for a back to back win as Arndt pulls through for a commanding lead in the points.
The Ford Mustangs finally find their stride with some exceptional racing. "This is a building year for our team and we are very pleased with the performance of all of our drivers." Said the Ford team director. He had a point. The Fords had some of the fastest laps this week but need the consistency to pull out a win. Dimeler's 3rd place finish was a shot across the bow of both Arndt and Dresser.
Pros
"The B Main is brutal these days. The competition is so incredible that we are now talking seconds between the A and B Mains" Said Hester who narrowly made the A Main over Thompson. The B Main drivers had something to prove. With Morrison out this week Romack capitalized and leapfrogged the Ferrari driver in the points race. Team Ford continues to show promise in the Pro ranks with Schaub out performing his past performances but Thompson beats him out for the spot next to Santamarina in the back of the A Main grid.
The McLaren pit was eerily quiet as the drivers and crews prepared for the final race at Blenheim. "We want a shut out." Said Stephenson. Ask and ye shall receive Gary. The first half of the race was lead by all three McLarens with the boys trading the lead lap after lap. Amazingly Yutaka's raw talent allowed him to claw his way from last place to win in what has been the best racing in the past two years of the Championship. If you didn't have a ticket to today's race you missed a real great show. Not to be outdone Stephenson held his own against the hard charging Ferrari's and Nissan, but Hester couldn't and dropped to a disappointing 5th place in this highly competitive race. The drivers say good by to the mossy fields of England with the next stop in the USofA. Where, regretfully to some, they will see the return to Wintergreen Speedway. "Many of us prefer the road courses, but we'll tear it up!" Commented Stephenson. No doubt the same power that brought McLaren success these past 3 weeks will keep them ahead of the pack on this high speed oval track. Qualifying As one would expect Team McLaren continued to "Protect Their House!" Stephenson edged out teammate Yutaka to take the pole position this week in what was called the ugliest qualifying session of the season. Santamarina and Hester were no where to be found in the top 3 spots with Hester barely making the A Main over Thompson by 3 seconds. Morrison's broken wheel kept him out of qualifying, and Schaub was missed also. The Rookies were also very tight with Dresser taking the pole position over Arndt in the second heat. Dimeler represented Ford well with some impeccably clean and fast laps, so if she could put them back to back she would have a chance of a podium spot. |
